Founding Partner & CEO

Gary Cone is one of America’s foremost business leaders and thinkers, having pioneered the development of the Six Sigma business improvement methodology while working at Motorola in the 1980s. Cone is also one of only four who further launched the wider Six Sigma revolution in the business world, beginning at AlliedSignal in 1994, where he was personally responsible for leading the deployment in the $6 billion automotive sector.

Overall, Cone has more than 30 years of experience achieving business performance improvement, successfully employing and adapting his knowledge of Business and Quality Systems, Strategy Deployment, Lean Six Sigma, Organizational Change, and Industrial Systems.  In addition to working with a broad range of Fortune 100 companies through his Six Sigma International and, now, Global Productivity Solutions (GPS) entities, Cone enjoys a rich business heritage, having previously held positions with Zenith Data Systems, Compaq and NCR.

Cone is a nationally respected and sought after speaker on business improvement methodology, Lean and Six Sigma, and the role of leadership in sustained business excellence.

In co-founding Global Productivity Solutions in 2000, Cone was determined to serve the broadest possible range of industry groups by partnering with leadership to drive breakthrough performance and sustainable improvement.  In particular, as matured and evolved by GPS, Lean and Six Sigma methodology is being applied to industries or business challenges outside of manufacturing and automotive.  GPS owns the trademark on the commercial phrase Operational Excellence®.

Aimée Cowher

As a founding partner of Clinton Township-headquartered Global Productivity Solutions (GPS), Aimée Cowher is one of Southeast Michigan’s dynamic business leaders, known for her expertise in business improvement methodology, ability to understand all levels of a company’s operation, and community affairs.

A native of Michigan, and one of the first industry Black Belts in Six Sigma business improvement methodology, Cowher’s career in applying diverse improvement methods to generate business results began nearly two decades ago when she led projects applying Lean and Six Sigma in the automotive industry. These projects included ways to improve product and systems quality, reliability of procured materials and responsiveness of key suppliers.

Over her career, Cowher has applied these business improvement skills and insights across a broad range of industries and endeavors, which include assignments for Black & Decker, Walbro Corporation, Bundy Corporation, TI Automotive, Technimark Inc., Telefonica (formerly BellSouth), Allied Signal, Life Technologies and Kraft Foods.

Throughout her career, Cowher has been recognized by customers as an exceptional coach and teacher. She has the ability to bridge the gap between strategic business planning and tactical implementation, and is equally adept at coaching leadership to drive organizational change.

These leadership skills carry over to Cowher’s dedication to community affairs. Cowher was instrumental in developing GPS’s “Forward Thinking is Giving Back” vision, whereby GPS donates each year a fixed percentage of profits and billable hours in business improvement methodology to charitable causes.

A Board Member at the Detroit Ronald McDonald House Charities, Cowher is also a Governing Member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Matthias Bauer

Matthias has spent the past 16 years working in process and service industry. Responsibilities included process improvement, restructuring, and execution assurance. He has worked and consulted for some of the world’s largest manufacturers, supervising operations spanning three continents where his change implementations and process improvements have resulted in double digit efficiency gains and margin improvements.

Matthias has led programs for multiple global renewable energy, heavy industry, fast moving consumer goods, and automotive projects. He structured and led major transformations in product development, supply chain and manufacturing as well as business process areas. Projects also included due diligence, post merger integration and restructuring together with Private Equity firms.

Prior to consulting, Matthias held positions with increasing responsibilities at Daimler, Chrysler, and Mitsubishi.  He was responsible for the standardization of manufacturing processes and architecture across three plants in a joint Chrysler and Mitsubishi vehicle program.  He was part of the turnaround team at Mitsubishi Motors in Japan that returned the ailing automotive manufacturer to a profitable position.

Since Matthias joined GPS in 2009 his experience and skills in identifying opportunities and structuring as well as leading the resulting transformations has benefited many customers with great returns.

When not traveling, Matthias, his wife and their two school-aged children live in Ann Arbor, MI.

Chris Carlson

Chris Carlson

Chris’ diverse functional background in aerospace engineering, organizational leadership, Lean Six Sigma implementation, and leading start-ups, enables him to efficiently improve client’s performance and long-term profitability. Drawing on his technical background in combination with an outgoing personality, Chris quickly engages with personnel at all levels of a client’s organization to expose the barriers to higher productivity levels. He has the experience and skills to then manage and execute the projects.

During his career, Chris has been involved with organizational leadership at the operational, executive, and Board of Directors levels; the start up and management of highly successful companies; implementing leading edge business techniques; leading technical and management teams involved with complex products and processes. In 2000, Chris began consulting in operations improvements at several international corporations while developing business plans for start up ventures. During this time Chris was asked to start a company that serviced the North American trucking industry. In the course of 4 years under Chris’ leadership this company grew to $16 million in revenue. He has served on two Board of Directors with companies in Aerospace and Transportation.
